What will happen at Chain Reaction 2009?

On 12 November 2009, Chain Reaction will bring together social leaders, community activists, policy makers, business leaders, and young people from around the globe to share learning and to generate new ideas for social change, locally, nationally and globally.

Morning Sessions:

09:00 - 12:00 UnLtd Social Entrepreneurship Pitching Session
Pitch your idea to the UnLtd team with a chance of getting funding for your project! UnLtd is a charity which supports social entrepreneurs – people with vision, drive, commitment and passion who wants to change the world for the better. We do this by providing a complete package of funding and support, to help these individuals make it a reality.  Level 1 Awards are designed to help make new ideas become real projects. UnLtd gives out 1,000 Level 1 Awards each year across the UK. Level 1 Awards are aimed at individuals or informal groups of people who have any idea and want help getting it off the ground. The money is to help with the running costs of the project, and at Chain Reaction, the pitchers are competing for one Level 1 Award

11:00 - 12:30 New Ideas for Engaging Communities in Social Change
How do we engage people in social change and how do we keep them engaged?  Join Martha Lane Fox, Chair of the Digital Inclusion Task Force, Liam Byrne MP, Chief Secretary to the Treasury, Dr Terry Ryall, Chief Executive of V, Mary Rhead-Corr, Executive Director, United Bank of Carbon, and Catherine Sermon, National Community Impact Director, Business in the Community to share ideas on how we can scale up community engagement

11:15 - 12:30 Investing in Social Value:
Join Angela Smith MP, Minister for the Third Sector, David Hutchinson, Chief Executive of Social Finance, Michael Cole-Fontayne, Chief Executive of Bank of New York Mellon, and Sophi Tranchell, Chief Executive of Divine Chocolate to examine the different ways in which we can invest in social value. 

11:15 - 12:30 Campaigning Masterclass:
Experts in the field will share learning on how to build ambitious and effective campaigns and support you to put your ideas into action. Participants include: Kerry McCarthy MP, Labour Party’s New Media Communications Spokesperson, Maeve McGoldrick, Campaign Co-ordinator, Need not Greed, Liam Barrington-Bush, Campaign Effectiveness at NCVO, and Emmanuelle Candengue & Richard Kusi, from the DCLG Young Advisors (Southwark)

11:30 - 12:45 Humanising Public Services:
Join Tessa Jowell MP, Minister for the Cabinet Office, London and the Olympics, and Paymaster General, & David Robinson, Vice Chair of the Council on Social Action and Senior Advisor at Community Links to discuss how we make public services more ‘human’ and engaging.  This session will also see the launch of two Council on Social Action reports.

11:15 - 12:30 The “Electronic” Collecting Tin workshop
Would an extra £80m in donations every year make a difference to UK charities working in local communities to improve people’s lives? The Pennies Foundation is launching a new concept in 2010 that will do just that. But how can we best work specifically with 1:1 based organisations to make the biggest impact in communities? Join this collaborative workshop to share ideas, and help shape this innovative project

11:15 - 13:15 The Basti Life simulation:
You are invited to this interactive session delivered by Global Hand, which will explore life living & working in a slum. Participants are divided into families and become paper-bag makers for survival & contend with unfair shopkeepers, debt collectors & the hazards of slum life. The simulation also explores the possibilities of positive social change through community development work in a slum.

All Day:  Social Investment Advice
The Social Investment Business is the largest social investor in the UK, with £400 million to invest through loan finance, support and, in some cases, additional grant finance. Our aim is to substantially improve the capacity of the Third Sector organisations to help them to play an ever greater role in improving the lives of the people and communities they serve.  The Social Investment Business currently manage four funds. The Futurebuilders England Fund that helps organisations to increase their capacity to deliver public services, The Modernisation Fund, a short term fund, helping organisations that directly support people suffering with effects of the recession, the Social Enterprise Investment Fund, which invests in organisations working in Health and Social care and, the Communitybuilders Fund, that aims to strengthen organisations towards more cohesive communities.  The Social Investment Business will be running a drop in advice service for Third Sector organisations all day at Chain Reaction

13:00 - 13:45 Wow - that’s a clever story...Challenging the way we give; drop by to hear Gloria Abramoff tell the remarkable story behind See The Difference & how it has become one of the most talked about projects in the third sector this year.  This is a drop in session, so why not pop by with your lunch?

14:00 - 15:30 Ideas for Financing Social Change
We are all feeling the impact of recession. Budgets are under pressure & traditional sources of funding are drying up. So what alternatives are there? Participants include:  Michael Green , Co-Author of Philanthrocapitalism, Shaks Ghosh, CEO of the Private Equity Foundation, Howard Dawber, Head of Strategy, Canary Wharf Ltd, and Vicenzo Russo, Head of Kiva Italy.  Chaired by Rajak Haik, Chair of the British Youth Council

14:00 - 15:30 Reforming Public Services
Can we design public services that are more empowering and achieve more with less? This session looks at the practicality of reforming public services, with practical case studies from communities around the UK Join Matthew Smerdon, Deputy Director of Baring Foundation, and Phil Jew, Head of Policy & Campaigns, Advice UK in this participatory session to look at the practicalities of public sector reform

14:00 - 15:30 Bringing People Together for Change: (panel session)
Explore new and existing ideas for engaging communities in social action.  Participants include: Paul Twivy, Big Lunch, Guy Watson, Riverford Organics, Helen Milner, UK Online Centre, Paul Massey, we20, Michael Devlin, RSA, Dan Thompson, Artists & Makers.  Chaired by Emmanuelle Candengue, Emmanuelle Candengue, DCLG Young Advisors

14:00 - 16:00 Social by Social:
Drawing on the learnings included in Social by Social: a practical guide to using new technology for social impact, the Social by Social Game walks participants through the strategic steps of creating a social media program for your community, whether you’re part of an organization, a geographic community, a campaign, or anything else.  The game is a fun way to collaborate with others and learn more about what’s needed to create a project that leverages social media.  We promise: it’s fun!

14:00 - 15:30 Collaborate for Social Innovation:
The world, as we know, is hot, flat, crowded – and very, very hungry.  If we don’t let go of the old hierarchical mindsets, tap into the 6 to 7 billion human minds spread throughout the planet, and learn how to pool our collective ideas, energy and resources to solve the most pressing challenges of the day… we must inevitably ready ourselves for a future full of discord, disease and disappointment.  In this session Nick Jankel, CEO of wecreate (wecreate.cc), collaboration and social innovation pioneer (and founder of Disruptive Social Innovators) will run a Masterclass on how to collaborate for breakthrough social innovation.  It will cover the challenges and benefits of collaborative social innovation, how to harness Collective Intelligence Disruptive Social Innovation and how to create it

15:45 - 17:15 User Design of Public Services:
How can we use design to improve service experience in public services?  How can we improve services and address social challenges?  This participatory co-design workshop led by ThinkPublic will involve participants in designing and prototyping a service that relates to one of their user groups

15:45 - 17:15 Effective Engagement in Communities:
Before Genuine community empowerment can take place, there is a need for successful engagement.  Delivered by The Kaizen Partnership Ltd, this workshop will allow participants to examine their own practise and develop the skills and strategies for effective engagement.

15:45 - 17:15 UnLtd Awards Finals Ask your social start-up related questions to our panel of experts.  Followed by live pitching by finalists to secure UnLtd Award with support and up to £5,000 for their project.  Panellists include; Rachel Elnaugh, Entrepreneur and former star of BBC’s Dragon’s Den, Oli Barrett, Social Entrepreneur, Cliff Prior, CEO of UnLtd and Natalie Campbell Enterprise UK. 

15:45 - 17:15 Tools to Finance Social Change:  (panel session)
Examine new and existing financial tools available to support social change.  Participants include David Gold, Chief Executive, Prospectus, Sue Cooper, Deputy Head of Business Banking, Triodos Bank, Russell Wells, Partner, Clifford Chance, and Tim Jones, CityLife Ltd
15:45 - 17:15 Ideas for Organising the Business of Social Change
Join Jess Steele, Head of Consultancy at the Development Trusts Association, Julia Clark, Brands Strategy Director, Tate & Lyle, Derek Browne, Founder of Entrepreneurs in Action, and Mikel Lezamiz, Head of Co-operative Dissemination at the Mondragon Co-operative, Spain, among others share ideas on what we can do differently to make an impact on our local and global communities

16:15 - 17:15 Mindfulness Workshop:
Mindfulness is a way of being more deeply aware of yourself, others and the world about you.  This session will introduce a variety of mindfulness practices that participants can use in their everyday lives

Evening Session

18:00 - 22:00 NFP Tweetup A meet up of social media users and those interested in the potential of social media for themselves or their organisations.  This event brings together organisations for peer-to-peer knowledge sharing and networking - it will be part learning, part sharing, part social, collaborative, casual and very friendly. Create your Own Agenda:

As well as a programme that will feature a mix of world class speakers and practical workshops, there will be facilitated ‘open space’ conversations, inspirational films and participatory sessions, all designed so that throughout the day participants can share their learning, network with new people, and develop their ideas

Chain Reaction also offers the Connect, Collaborate, Commit process to support attendees to connect to the people they want to meet, collaborate to develop ideas and commit to taking action together. 

In our open space area you will be able to hold your own meetings and discuss your ideas and issues important to you.  Tea and coffee will be available all day so that you can take a break from sessions whenever you want, and lunch will be available from 12:00 – 14:00
